Excerpt
Excerpt Spinway distributed its software on CD-ROMs at cash registers in its partners’ stores. Spinway pays for the Net infrastructure, customer service, and other costs of providing access, and gets to keep revenue from ads that appear on its control bar. Its partners get a way to build their Net business and to cement their customer relationships.
Seabolt is most proud of Spinway’s latest ad format: full-motion video commercials in the “dead time” during dial-up. Like other ads, the videos download during unused connection time while e-mail is written or Web pages are read. The next time the user starts up the service, the commercial runs. The more often the user signs on, the more often the commercial changes. Pilot advertisers include Kmart, Ford, golf e-retailer Chipshot.com, and the film The Perfect Storm.
One might think the spots would alienate an audience saturated by advertising, but Seabolt says commercials tailored to the user are an improvement on a blank screen.
