Claims
1
A user interface for a manufacturing application, comprising:
a primary focus area containing at least two functional solutions for selection by a user;
a subordinate focus region having at least two data selectors for selecting sub-components of each of the at least two functional solutions to define a selected item, the lens components and primary focus area being arranged linear and sequential;
a selection display area displaying the selected item;
a visualization selection region containing lens components identifying display options for viewing the selected item; and
a display area in which the selected item is displayed according to the display option chosen in the visualization selection region, the selection display area and visualization selection region being arranged adjacent to the display area and the display area being larger than any other area or region.

The above links (in the excerpts section) provide a detailed view of the NeXTStep operating system. As seen in the figures and the video, the selections made along a path to reach a particular file/folder/application are stored in a display section on top of the user interface. This is similar to the solution described in the ‘526 application, i.e., the context in which the selections are being made is not lost (but stored) while a user makes selections on the user interface. The NeXTStep interface also allows hierarchy based arrangement and selection of objects. Looking at the images (provided as hyperlinks), one can conclude that the primary focus area, the subordinate focus region and the selection display area are present in the NeXTStep user interface. In case of NeXTStep, the main display appears in a separate window as opposed to being shown in the same window (as described in ‘526 application). However, having the main display in the same window may appear obvious to those skilled in the art. Also, the separate window may contain system elements (corresponding to the lens components described in the ‘526 application), which are capable of displaying the file/folder/application in desired formats. However, these system elements can only be used once the file/folder/application is displayed in the separate window, as opposed to the use of lens components before visualizing the selected item in the main display window in the ‘526 application.
