Microsoft's family of Fawcett patents covers remote software upgrades. They include 5,845,077, 6,073,214, and 6,327,617, with priority dates that reach back to 1995. These patents generally describe taking a software inventory of a remote computer and having a server push out patches to upgrade the computer's software.
