The claims seem to be consistent with Copy Control Information (CCI) which is often linked to CDs or DVDs; however the general patent from Sony (US Patent 6978377 - Copy protection using detailed copy control information) and its references are written inclusive of all "data" between 2 "systems" and include a description of transmission of CCI along with the data. CCI data is well understood to be comprised of bit flags that signal copy permission, generational control and count among other things that 2 systems agree upon. These enforcement on top of CCI is left to the implementation and usually assumed to be some form of Copy Protection system such as a DRM.

There seems to be overlap between some of the claims here and those made in application 11/204,059 by Peter Kassan. Both involve contacting a database or clearinghouse of sorts to authorize use of the content and settle payment info.

The very general initial claim also looks a lot like the kinds of data manipulations that occur in MAC (Mandatory Access Control) MLS (MultiLevel Security) systems. In particular, Compartmented Mode Workstation (CMW) has a way to copy text between different windows, which are at different levels.

At first blush this looks like a variation in the area of digital rights and copyright protection. Some existing patents seem to address similar concerns through various forms of licensing and authorization. E.g. US6766305: Licensing system and method for freely distributed information; WO9825373A2: WEB SITE COPY PROTECTION SYSTEM AND METHOD; US6973445: Demarcated digital content and method for creating and processing demarcated digital works.
