a mechanism for statically allocating a segment of memory for one or more data structures of a particular type;

a mechanism for determining, in response to a first attempt to allocate memory dynamically for a particular data structure of the particular type, whether the first attempt is being made as a result of a second attempt to allocate memory dynamically for one or more data structures of the particular type; and

a mechanism for using, in response to a determination that the first attempt is being made as a result of the second attempt, at least a portion of the segment to satisfy the first attempt instead of using dynamically allocated memory to satisfy the first attempt.
