IBM has a product called Lotus Mobile Connect, previously version was called WebSphere Everyplace Connection Manager. This product contains gateway with gatekeeper, session persistence (keeps connection alive - thus allowing to switch between connection types umts, gprs, UTP cable network, etc), device management, sets ip VPN, etc.. It looks like the patent is describing this product.
