Apple Remote Desktop first shipped in 2002. It incorporates many of the claims of this patent. In particular, it provides an overview of a plurality of workstations, and lets the overview operator click on an individual workstation to enlarge it or control it directly, overriding the local workstation operator.

The VNC protocol is a simple protocol for remote access to graphical user interfaces. It is based on the concept of a remote framebuffer or RFB. In the past we have tended to refer to the VNC protocol as the RFB protocol, so you may have seen this term in other publications. The protocol simply allows a server to update the framebuffer displayed on a viewer. Because it works at the framebuffer level it is potentially applicable to all operating systems, windowing systems and applications. The protocol will operate over any reliable transport such as TCP/IP.

"Timbuktu(R) Pro Remote Control Software" is being used by helpdesk teams to view user stations for the purpose of troubleshooting and correcting issues with the end user computer. In order to provide this functionality, Timbuktu performs the remote workstation display on the "console" and allows "observe" and "control" functions.

Virtual Network Computing (VNC) describes a network where a single Client receives (compressed or uncompressed) image data from any number of Servers over a given network. The Client in turn sends control data for mouse, keyboard and other devices to a Server.
